It means to do something you know is wrong. Like, cheating on a test. I probably wouldn't compromise my principles to get ahead, but it really depends on the situation.

I would go really far until I got in trouble for the workbook then I realized I need to stay with class so I can actually learn something from the video. So not all the time it's a great idea to get ahead. Like I said you should just stay on task.
